Historic Little Italy Design Committee Goals for 2009

Working with the Clean, Green & Safe Housing Committee, repeat the Clean-Up, Green-Up week to make it an annual event to be improved and expanded each year.
Coordinate activities with the National Organization of Churches and its "2009 Blitz".
Promote use of the HLI logo and tag line in neighborhood design elements.
Work with business or property owners on West 18th Stree to renovate facates using CDBG funds from the City.
Secure funding for detailed design and construction of the West 18th Street corridor streetscaping improvement project, addressing sidewalks and curbs, lighting, trees and streetscaping, location and design of shelters for EMTA stops, public and private parking lots, intersection improvements, entrances and exits for parking lots, infill development, utility poles and overhead wires and cables. If possible, begin construction of improvements.
Begin planning & design of two additional gateways, preferably the murals and lighting related to the two railroad overpasses, and pursue funding. Construct the first two gateways on West 18th Street.
Confirm design of piazza at 16th & Walnut Streets, retain a design firm to design and cost out the project, pursue funding and begin property acquisition.
Plan and construct one additional parking area along West 18th Street.
Expand membership and activities of the Garden Club.
Begin designing the parking area on north side of 200 block of West 16th Street, working with property and business owners; Acquire a cost estimate and investigate funding for the project.
Identify a public gathering area along West 18th Street, working with the Economic Development Committee to implement a comfotable, safe, green, well-lit public space, possibly adding a kiosk for public notices, bulletins, and other general notices.
Begin approaching property owners along West 18th Street regarding recommendations for their individual properties, discussing ideas, options, financing assistance, relocation opportunities, etc.
Work with City and EMTA regarding the addition of transit shelters at key locations within the neighborhood and begin planning construction of at least one transit shelter.
